[Alinea-Home] From the Desk of Denise: A Question My Son Asked That Changed Me Forever

Welcome to Alinea-Home!
We are honored to walk alongside you as you shape your home education journey. Our work centers on supporting parents as educational leaders — building the structure, confidence, and sustainable systems needed to create meaningful learning environments for their children. You are in the right place to begin thoughtfully, calmly, and with intention.

This Week: From the Desk of Denise

"Alinea-Home Parent-to-Teacher AcademyTM is 121 days away from the opening."

Greetings, everyone,

Well, we are now in March — and just 121 days away from the opening of the Alinea-Home Parent-to-Teacher Academy.

Over the past few months, we have explored many aspects of homeschooling together. You have received access to homeschool conference and curriculum planning materials, including questions to ask curriculum vendors, how to review textbooks, a homeschool requirements guide, and even a supplemental resource example of what the academy will offer.

Along the way, I have also shared several articles about homeschooling. One that resonated deeply with many of you asked an important question:

"Can Parents Be Prepared to Teach Their Own Children?"

My answer is yes — but only when we recognize the distinction between home-schooling and home-education.

If you missed that discussion or would like to revisit it, you can read it again here: HERE.

As we move closer to June 30th, I want to spend more time discussing what is inside the “parent-first” curriculum itself. Between now and opening day, I will begin giving you a closer look at the parent-to-teacher curriculum and the philosophy behind it.

This academy did not appear overnight. It has taken more than four years to build from the ground up, inspired in part by the framework of the historic Normal School — institutions once created specifically to prepare teachers in the craft of education.

But before I tell you more about the academy, I want to share a short story.

A True Story

I remember standing in my son’s first condo while he was in the kitchen preparing a meal for us. In the middle of cooking, he turned to me and asked a simple question.

“Is there any way you could help moms who want to homeschool their children — especially those who are just beginning to build their homes and their teaching life?”

My first response surprised him.

I told him that I did not believe parents would want my help — let alone pay for it. In my mind, the life I had lived as a homemaker and homeschooling mom had become far too old-fashioned for the modern world. Women today have many options, and I assumed there was little interest in learning the kind of life I had built at home.

He listened quietly and then said something I have never forgotten.

“Yes there is. And I hope you change your mind.”

It took several more years for me to fully see what he saw.

Eventually, I paused long enough to reflect on my own experiences — marriage, parenting, homemaking, and the years we spent in home-education. I began writing again, asking what it might look like to help a new generation of women navigate these same transitions.

Looking back, I can honestly say that I loved the years I spent as a parent and the moment when that role gradually expanded into becoming my children’s teacher.

Today, I feel grateful to be able to share what is coming next.

Some of you reading this newsletter no longer homeschool. Others have been homeschooling for many years. And some of you are just beginning to explore the possibility.

As you learn more about the "parent-first curriculum" in the coming weeks, someone may come to mind — a friend, a sister, or a parent who might benefit from these conversations. If so, feel free to share the newsletter sign-up link so we can continue growing home education and this community together.

A Fact

I believe deeply in home-education, and I feel honored to have been entrusted with guiding my own two children through their homeschool and college completion years.

Now I hope to help prepare the next generation of parents as they build something new — something different in education: A home and school integration plan.

A Home Designed for Learning

Over the next several months, you may notice the newsletter evolving slightly. My goal is to use this space not only to encourage you, but also to help develop the confidence and readiness parents need as they transition into home education.

This includes:

• parents just beginning the journey
• families who began during COVID and want to reset their approach
• those still trying to find their footing
• and parents navigating increasingly complex state requirements

I also look forward to welcoming many of you into the first cohort of the Alinea-Home Parent-to-Teacher Academy.

Inside the academy, parents move through four areas of preparation designed to support the transition from parent to teacher:

  • Home Prep
  • Parent Prep
  • School Prep
  • Record-Keeping Prep

Within this framework, there is no assumption that every parent begins the homeschooling journey feeling confident or fully prepared. Many families enter home education with questions, uncertainty, and a desire to do the best they can for their children.

The academy exists to provide the structure, encouragement, and practical preparation that help parents grow into that role with knowledge, skills, and confidence in their own decision-making.

Although it has taken several years to design and commit to this work, I cannot imagine a better season of life to begin sharing it — drawing from the years I spent living and learning through my own home-education journey. I look forward to being an asset to you in your transition.

A Resource is Coming!

Here is a small preview: "The Lucky Find Bundle"

This collection was curated for parents who are often quietly searching — trying to understand their child better, trying to discover what fits, and sometimes simply hoping to feel less alone.

On Wednesday, I will be sharing a new collaboration resource that may be helpful for many families — whether you homeschool or not.

It exists for that 10:00 PM moment
when a parent is wondering if there is something they have not tried yet,
or hoping to find a resource that finally makes sense for their child.

Each guide, tool, class, and resource included in the bundle carries its own strength and perspective. Individually, they offer support. Together they form a thoughtful collection designed to meet parents gently — without pressure, without judgment, and without the assumption that anything needs to be “fixed.”

I look forward to sharing it with you on Wednesday. Thank you for being here — and for the work you do every day in your homes.

Until then...

Denise

Coming Next Friday: From the Desk of Denise

This week’s discussion naturally leads to a larger question I think about often: Why the First Three Years Matter

Nearly eight years after COVID disrupted traditional schooling, many families who began homeschooling during that time have chosen not to return to the public or private school system. Instead, they have continued building their own home education environments.

And yet, one important question continues to surface among new homeschool parents:

How do I actually begin?

Why? Let's talk about it next Friday. Denise
